An NST looks at the well-being of your baby based on the relationship between the baby's heart rate and the baby's activity. A monitor that transmits the baby's heartbeat is placed on mom. Another monitor that detects uterine contractions is also placed on mom. Mom then presses a button every time the baby moves. The baby's heart rate should accelerate, by fifteen beats for at least fifteen seconds, twice in a twenty minute period. This is called a reactive NST and is a good sign that the baby is healthy.
