Circumcision is still debated and the pendulum swings over the years as
to whether or not to do it. Circumcision is removing part of the foreskin
of the penis in boy babies. Fewer circumcisions are being done today. There
is no medical reason, except rarely, for a circumcision. Some religions
have made it part of their beliefs. The reason most circumcisions are done
is cosmetic: to look like dad, big brother, or the other boys. The choice
must be yours. You should research this as carefully as your choice of
delivery method.
If you do decide to circumcise your son, the baby will be circumcised when he is about 12-24 hours old. Mom or Dad or both may hold and soothe the baby during the procedure. Different methods are used today. One uses a metal bell shaped instrument that is placed over the penis and clamped around the foreskin. The excess foreskin is removed with a scalpel. Another method uses a clamp-like device called a Mogan-Davey that is placed across the pulled up foreskin. The clamp is closed, and the foreskin removed with the scalpel. You will be taught to care for the penis before you leave the hospital. |
