Tubal Ligation
HOW IT WORKS:
Blocking the tube which carries the egg to the uterus either by cutting and tying or by applying cautery, clips or silastic rings.
(Use of Quinicrine pellets in third world countries has been done but is not accepted as a standard method since it causes scarring of the uterus and not just blocking of the tubes.  There is also a question of the drug cancer causing potential)
EFFECTIVENESS:
99%
AVERAGE COST:
Varies depending on physician and location
ADVANTAGES:
One time decision. Safe for general health (after procedure). Does not interfere with spontaneity.
DISADVANTAGES:
Surgical procedure required. Permanent. Less than 1% of women get rejoining of the tube ends. A very small percentage of women may have increased pain with periods after procedure. Only should be chosen by those who are absolutely sure no children or no more children are wanted.
HOW TO USE IT:
The surgeon surgically cuts and ties the tubes through a small incision under the umbilicus after childbirth. A laparoscope, an instrument inserted through a small abdominal incision, is used to burn the tubes or place clips or silastic rings over the tubes, thus blocking the tubes.  For details, please contact your doctor.  There are also more details in the additional information section.
YOU NEED TO CALL A HEALTH CARE PROVIDER IMMEDIATELY IF:
You experience any of the following: any of the post operative symptoms given you by the surgeon; late or missed period; sever lower abdominal pain; or nausea and breast tenderness.  Although pregnancy is extremely rare, it can occur.
