HOW IT WORKS:
Forms a chemical barrier that either kills the sperm or makes them inactive and thus unable to pass through the cervix to the egg. No sperm - no pregnancy.

ADVANTAGES:
Available without a prescription.  No known risk to general health.  Fertility returns immediately upon discontinued use.  One product available that lasts 24 hours and does not require re-application with each sex act.
DISADVANTAGES:
Some STD protection.  Less effective than other methods.  Effectiveness can be increased if used with condoms. Must wait 8 hours before taking a bath or douche.  Usually last only one hour.  Side effects: Vaginal irritation, some women are allergic to spermicides.  May interrupt lovemaking - most products need insertion at least ten minutes before intercourse.  Majority of products only last for one sex act.
HOW TO USE IT:
Must be applied into the vagina within 30 minutes of ejaculation. Inserts may need to be placed one hour before intercourse. Must follow package directions.
