Trichomoniasis
WHAT IS IT?:
A protozoan infection
CAUSE:
Trichomonas vaginalis, a motile protozoan
TRANSMISSION:
Generally sexually, but can rarely be acquired in swimming pools and wet towels because may survive in body fluids (semen, vaginal secretions, and urine) outside the body for a few hours. 
SYMPTOMS:
FIRST APPEARANCE: 14-28 days after infection
WOMEN - White to yellow frothy, itchy discharge which has a bad odor. 
MEN - Penile itching
TESTS:

Cultures, wet mount or stained examination.
TREATMENT:
Metronidazole, an prescription antibiotic. Can be given either orally for both partners, or vaginally for women. 
DO NOT CONSUME ALCOHOL WHILE TAKING THE MEDICATION; SEVERE NAUSEA AND VOMITING CAN OCCUR.
TREATMENT OF PARTNER IS ESSENTIAL TO AVOID PING-PONG EFFECT.

LIFE TIME EFFECTS FOR YOU:
Can recur if improperly treated as long as twenty years after original infection.
COMMENTS:
An estimated 7 million cases occur each year in the US.   Trichomoniasis is a very common sexually transmitted disease.  Cultures increase the chances of detecting this organism and may reveal positive cases that might be missed by wet mount or stained examination.
