Hepatitis C
WHAT IS IT?:
A liver disease caused by a virus
CAUSE:
Hepatitis C virus
TRANSMISSION
Contact with blood, semen, vaginal secretions, saliva.  Sexual contact, household contact, mother to baby, transfusions (this is unlikely due to blood screenings today).
SYMPTOMS:
FIRST APPEARANCE: 2-6 months after infection
WOMEN - Jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, intermittent nausea, vomiting
MEN - Jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, intermittent nausea, vomiting
TESTS:
Blood test for antibody titers
TREATMENT:
No treatment except supportive care with rest and proper diet.
CURABLE:
No cure
LIFE TIME EFFECTS FOR YOU:
85% of infected persons will develop chronic infections
70% will develop chronic liver disease
Can eventually cause death
COMMENTS:
Estimated 3.9 million chronically infected Americans.  The level of infection appears to have leveled off as more people become aware of the disease.
