What if you get an STD?
Impossible as it is to believe, you're one of 25% of Americans who will get an STD or one of 25-30% of people worldwide.  What will you do now that you have been diagnosed?
Remember - Most STDs are treatable.  The earlier you seek medical care, the less likely it is that you will have complications, spread it to other, or pass it on to your baby if you are a woman who is pregnant or nursing.  Even if you are embarrassed or afraid -YOU MUST GET MEDICAL CARE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Once you have been diagnosed with an STD:
  • Get Treated.
  • Follow the doctor's orders and complete the FULL course of medication.
  • Go for a follow-up test to make sure the infection has been treated successfully.
  • STOP ALL SEXUAL ACTIVITY WHILE BEING TREATED.
  • If you are a woman and if you are breast feeding, substitute formula while being treated.
  • Notify all recent sex partners and tell them you have been diagnosed.  Strongly urge them to get tested.  This may be difficult to do but it will help stop the spread of the disease.
Know that you are not alone.  Speak about it with your health care provider.  If you are too embarrassed to do this, call an STD Hotline in your area to speak with someone.  The calls are anonymous.
