Human papilloma virus
WHAT IS IT?:
Genital warts, also called venereal warts.
CAUSE:
Human papillomavirus, a virus related to the virus that causes common skin warts
TRANSMISSION
Infects mucous membranes during vaginal, anal, oral or anal intercourse.
SYMPTOMS:

FIRST APPEARANCE: One month or more after infection. The average incubation period is two to three months.
WOMEN - First appear as small, hard painless bumps in the vaginal area or around the anus.  Flesh colored, wart-like growths (growths look like cauliflower), sometimes itching and irritation.  Sometimes women first show positive with an abnormal pap smear.  Change in tone of voice in the case of laryngeal HPV.
MEN - First appear as small, hard painless bumps on the penis or around the anus.  Flesh colored, wart-like growths (growths look like cauliflower), sometimes itching and irritation.  Change in tone of voice in the case of laryngeal HPV.
TESTS:
Visual examination with or without the application of acetic acid (vinegar and water solution).  In the case of abnormal pap smears in women a colposcopic (special magnification test) is done.  Also typing is done by lab testing.
TREATMENT:
Visible warts are removed with liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy), podophyllin, acids, or laser surgery.  Women may need to have cone biopsies (a cone shaped piece of cervix is removed) if it has progressed to the pre-cancerous stage.
CURABLE:
No cure for HPV
LIFE TIME EFFECTS FOR YOU:
WOMEN: Can block vaginal opening. May be linked to cancer of the vagina, vulva, cervix and anus. Can infect baby if born through growths causing laryngeal HPV which can eventually block their throat.
MEN: Untreated, the growths can block penile and rectal openings.  May be linked to cancer of penis and anus.
COMMENTS:
It is estimated that 30% of all sexually active adults are infected with the HPV virus.
