HOW IT WORKS:
Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM) suppresses ovulation because suckling (breast feeding by the baby) changes the body's physiology so that ovulation does not occur.  No egg, no pregnancy.
EFFECTIVENESS:
98% if no menses has occurred, only breast feeding is used to feed the baby or prior to six months of age for the baby
AVERAGE COST:
$0.00 costs nothing
ADVANTAGES:
Effective immediately. Does not interfere with intercourse.  No side effects. No cost.  Gives infants passive immunity.  Decreased post-partum bleeding.  Can be used by anyone who is exclusively using breast feeding as the baby's nutrition.
DISADVANTAGES:
Offers no STD protection.  Highly effective only until period returns or up to 6 months.  May need to use a lubricant because of vaginal dryness. May be difficult to do if you return to the workplace before the baby is 6 months old.  Doesn't work if baby does not suckle frequently.  Must feed on demand and at least 6-10 times a day including night feedings.  Not reliable if period has returned no matter what the age of the baby.
HOW TO USE IT:
Breast feed the baby at least 6-10 times a day, on demand, from both breasts, including night feedings.
COMPLICATIONS: WHEN YOU NEED TO SEE A HEALTH CARE PROVIDER IMMEDIATELY
Breasts or nipples become red, swollen, or cracked.  When your period has returned.
