Correct Use of the Sponge
WARNING:
DO NOT USE THE SPONGE IF YOU HAVE EVER HAD TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME.
PLACEMENT:
Read the package directions, especially if you have not used the sponge since it went off the market.
  • Wash hands thoroughly.
  • Moisten the sponge, but don't soak it, with water.
  • Using the picture as a guide for proper handling, place the sponge into the vagina, against the cervix as in the diagram below. 
  • The side of the sponge with the string should be toward the outside of the body.
  • It may be left in place for up to, but no more than, 24 hours.
REMOVAL:
Leave the sponge in place for at least 6 hours after sex.
Pull on the string attached to the sponge to remove it.
CALL YOUR PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:
  • Fever for unknown reason
  • profuse, foul-smelling vaginal discharge
  • unusual lower abdominal pain
