Instructions for Emergency Contraception
PLEASE NOTE: Always check with your own health care giver before using emergency contraception, even if you have the pills from a previous episode of failed contraception.
THE FIRST STEP
The FIRST STEP in using any emergency contraception is to do a pregnancy test.  Various pregnancy tests have different ways of showing positive (you're pregnant) and negative (you're NOT pregnant) results.  If you are PREGNANT, call your health care provider immediately. DO NOT TAKE ANY PILLS.  If you are not pregnant, go to the next step and choose an emergency contraceptive.  (PREVEN®, the newly approved "Morning After Pill" has a pregnancy test as part of the kit.)
THE NEXT STEP
If you have a NEGATIVE pregnancy test, choose the Emergency Contraceptive Method you want to use.
PREVEN® EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVE KIT

  • Read Patient information book with detailed patient information.

  • If test is negative, take the first dose of 2 pills within 72 hours after having unprotected sex., and the second dose of two pills 12 hours later.
  • A three-week follow-up visit with your health care professional is recommended.
The PREVEN® Emergency Contraceptive Kit contains a pregnancy test to rule out an existing pregnancy resulting from intercourse that occurred earlier in the current menstrual cycle or the previous cycle. If a positive pregnancy result is obtained, the pills in the PREVEN® Kit should not be taken.
