Birth Control: Instructions for Use of the Cervical Cap

Cervical Cap Instructions

Placement:

You can insert the cap several hours before intercourse.

Fill the cap approximately 1/3 full of spermicide.
In a comfortable position (one foot on the toilet or a chair, sitting on the edge of the toilet ot chair, lying in bed, or squatting down), locate your cervix an separate the labia with one hand.
Insert the cap into the vagina, onto the cervix. Pinch the rim and twist the cap - like a jar lid.
Run your finger around the rime to make sure the cervix is covered completely and the cap is securely placed

Removal:

Using a finger at the rim of the cap, pull down to break the suction.
Once the suction is broken, pull the cap out.

You DO NOT have to add more spermicide with each act of intercourse. The cap MUST stay in place at least 8 hours after the last sex act. It can stay in place up to 48 hours, but NO LONGER.

Care of your Cap:
After each use, wash the cap with mild soap and warm water. Clean the groove inside the rim with a cotton swab. Dry the cap and, if you wish, dust it lightly with cornstarch before storing it in its case.
For disposable caps, follow each manufacturer's instructions.
