HOW IT WORKS:

A soft, rubber dome forms a barrier to prevent sperm from reaching the cervix. A spermicidal gel, which is ALWAYS used with it, kills or immobilizes sperm.

ADVANTAGES:

Safe. Fertility returns immediately with discontinued use.  Can be inserted 2-3 hours before lovemaking.  May reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Some STD protection.

DISADVANTAGES:

Must be fitted by a health care professional.  Needs prescription.  Must be left in place 6-8 hours after intercourse.  Must be used each time.  May become dislodged. Some women may be allergic to spermicides, latex. Must be replaced periodically.  Can be messy. Must apply spermicide with each new act of intercourse.  May have an increase in urinary tract infections. Need to be re-fitted after a 10 pound weight loss or gain and after pregnancy. May decrease spontaneity.  Should not be used by women with a history of toxic shock of frequent bladder infections.

HOW TO USE IT:

Apply spermicide inside and around the rim of the diaphragm, then place it deep into the vagina, covering the cervix.

You experience any of the following: pain or discomfort while it's in place; your partner experiences pain during intercourse; frequent bladder infections; soreness of the vagina; rash in the genital area; or profuse, foul-smelling or itchy discharge.
