The Wisdom of the Ages
"Modern Medicine" is only a little more than 100 years old.  Before that, doctors were trained by apprenticeship.  This was the practice dating back to pre-recorded history.  Louis Pasteur, in the late 1880’s, proposed that illness was caused by toxin-producing germs. The newly trained medical doctors (some of whom had only one month of formal medical school education !!) embraced this theory.  Thus began the competition between traditional and ‘new’ medicine.  Today we look at traditional medicine as that taught in medical schools. Non-traditional medicine includes such practices as acupuncture, massage therapy and herbal medicine.  Herbal medicine has been practiced for centuries, but is only now being recognized and licensed.  There has been a resurgence in natural healing by natural means, which includes herbal medicine.
Herbal Medicine is the oldest form of medical treatment throughout the world.  The uses of different plants have been handed down through centuries.  In fact, many of the prescription drugs today are made from plant extracts.  Today, many of the common healing herbs are purified and packaged by health food stores.  The following list names the herb, scientific name, uses, side effects, and safety.   We will add to this over time.
Remember these are still medications whether you buy over the counter or not.  Read directions carefully and consult a good herbalist or your physician before beginning any new medication.  This is especially true if you are pregnant.
